Dental implants are gaining popularity as the top tooth replacement option, but they are new enough that many patients have questions about them. Dr. Konopka and our team are happy to answer your questions about dental implants to help you determine if this restoration is right for you.

  1. What is a dental implant?

Dental implants consist of titanium posts attached to a dental restoration, such as a crown, bridge, or denture. The post is surgically attached to your jawbone to replace the missing tooth root and provide stability for the rest of the restoration.

  1. How many teeth does a dental implant replace?

Dental implants can replace a single tooth, multiple teeth, and even a full arch. Dr. Konopka can attach a dental restoration in the form of a single crown, bridge, partial, or complete denture.

  1. How do I care for my dental implant?

Dental implants require the same care as natural teeth. Brush and floss your dental implant as you would a normal tooth to remove buildup and keep the surrounding gum tissue clean and healthy. Even if you received a full arch replacement, you will need to clean your mouth every day and visit our dentist for checkups.

  1. Could my body reject the implant?

Technically, a dental implant cannot be rejected because they contain no living cells. Some patients experience allergies, but these are very rare due to the biocompatibility of the implant post. Sometimes, a dental implant does not integrate properly with the jawbone and may need to be redone, but this too is uncommon. Overall, dental implants have a very high success rate.

  1. Are dental implants right for me?

Dr. Konopka will perform a thorough dental exam, complete with X-rays and a 3D scan of the implant location, to determine if you are a candidate for dental implants.
