Dental implants are becoming more and more popular as an option for replacing missing teeth. However, they are still new enough that many patients have questions about them. As a result, Dr. Konopka and our team are happy to answer your questions about dental implants to help you determine if this restoration is right for you.

  1. What is a dental implant?

Dental implants consist of titanium posts that attach to a dental restoration, such as a crown, bridge, or denture. Our dentist will surgically attact the post to your jawbone to replace the missing tooth root. This ultimately provides stability for the rest of the restoration.

  1. How many teeth does a dental implant replace?

Dental implants can replace a single tooth, multiple teeth, and even a full arch. Dr. Konopka can attach a dental restoration in the form of a single crown, bridge, partial, or complete denture.

  1. How do I care for my dental implant?

Dental implants require the same care as natural teeth. Brush and floss your dental implant as you would a normal tooth to remove buildup. Regular dental hygiene also helps keep the surrounding gum tissue clean and healthy. Even if you received a full arch replacement, you will need to clean your mouth every day and visit our dentist for checkups.

  1. Could my body reject the implant?

Technically, your body cannot reject a dental implant because implants do not contain any living cells. Some patients experience allergic reactions, but these are very rare due to fact that implant posts are extremely biocompatible. Sometimes, a dental implant does not integrate properly with the jawbone and may need to be redone; however, this, too, is uncommon. Overall, dental implants have a very high success rate.

  1. Are dental implants right for me?

Dr. Konopka will perform a thorough dental exam, complete with X-rays and a 3D scan of the implant location, to determine if you are a candidate for dental implants.
